Our Counsellors

 Our professional counselling team consists of individuals who are all experienced and capable of helping.  We are all Social Workers, who are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and have acheived a Master of Social Work degree.  Our receipts may be used with your extended health benefits if you have coverage for social workers, and are able to be included on your income tax return as a part of your medical expenses for the year.
 

Joy Lang, M.S.W., R.S.W. Certified EMDR Therapist

Joy started in the field of social work after graduating from Ryerson University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Social Work degree.  She moved to the Waterloo Region in 1997, where she was employed by Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region as an intake worker.  In July 2000, she became a child protection supervisor.

Joy returned to school and achieved her Master of Social Work degree from Flinders University (Australia) in 2009.  She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW).  

Joy has continued her to develop her skills and knowledge by taking courses in couples counselling, Criticial Incident Stress Management, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (certification completed in July 2013) and addictions.

During the course of her career, Joy has worked with a variety individuals, couples and families and groups, including families of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, including same-sex couples.

Joy is particularly interested and experienced in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, couples struggling with marital difficulties, stepfamilies, and individuals who are looking to make changes in their lives.

Joy is currently able to offer appointments during the daytime.

Betty Finnie, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Betty graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2010 with her Master of Social Work degree and Western University (formerly UWO) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences, Minor in Thanatology 2007. She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). 

Over the course of Betty’s career, she has worked in a number of settings including Diabetes Education Program Clinical Social Worker, Inpatient Social Worker and Clinical Social Worker. She has taken many additional training courses including, Emotionally Focused Couple Counselling, Mindfulness and PTSD.

Betty brings calming and warm presence to her work with clients. She enjoys working with a variety of clients, including teens and their families, couples, women who have experienced trauma and individuals who are experiencing depression and/or anxiety.

Betty can currently offer appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the daytime and evening.

Sue Gallagher, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Sue graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1984 with her Master of Social Work degree.  She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW).  Over the course of Sue’s career, she has worked in a number of settings including post-secondary education, child welfare and with the Waterloo Region Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre. 

Sue brings a warm and calming presence to her work with clients.  She enjoys working with a variety of clients, including teens and their families, women who have experienced trauma and individuals who are experiencing depression and/or anxiety.

Sue is currently able to offer appointments before the regular workday begins, in addition to during the day and early evening.

Mary MacDonald-Young, M.S.W, R.S.W.

Mary has degrees from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science and Wilfrid Laurier University with a Master of Social Work and many years working as a therapist in an outpatient mental health clinic. She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). 

Mary has acquired additional training/certification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focussed therapy and Smoking Cessation Counselling. Mary has extensive clinical experience providing individual and group counselling and psychotherapy, to adults living with anxiety, depression, and other types of emotional and personal distress.

Mary’s gentle approach allows her clients to develop a better understanding that the past and their present have on them and those around them. Mary’s open and collaborative style focuses on strength, insight and skill building for successfully managing emotions, relationships and daily life.

Mary currently offers Wednesday daytime and evening.

Sunna Murphy, M.S.W, R.S.W 

Sunna graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2013 with her Master of Social Work degree and from University of Waterloo in 2007 with a Joint Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Literature.  She is an upstanding member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, as well as a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Sunna has over 10 years of experience working with diverse communities on issues related to sexuality, gender, race, disability, and equity. She has worked in restorative justice mediation, sexual abuse and domestic violence treatment, hate crime prevention and LGBTQ advocacy. 

Sunna works with youth and adults and she specialises in the areas of trauma, attachment, borderline personality disorder, sexual orientation & gender diversity, and adolescent psychology.

Her unique therapeutic approach blends attachment theory, narrative therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy and art based methods.  She is passionate about helping people find their authentic voice and using creative pathways to healing.

Sunna currently offers Tuesday and Wednesday, daytime and evening.

Cookie Leach, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Cookie graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2003 with her Master of Social Work degree.  She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW).

Cookie has worked in a variety of settings over the course of her career, including with the Waterloo Region Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre, St. Mary’s Hospital and Community Justice Initiatives. 

Cookie enjoys working with individuals and couples.  She tries to provide helpful strategies to her clients so they are able to work on their difficulties outside of their sessions. Cookie’s practical, warm and direct style is a great match with clients who want to get to the heart of the issues.

Cynthia Reinhart, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Cynthia graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2008 with her Master of Social Work degree. She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, as well as a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Cynthia has worked in a number of settings. She has experience working with child welfare, probation, mental health and adults with special needs.

Cynthia is interested in working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and grief and loss. She also enjoys working with couples who have a variety of issues and stresses in their relationships.

Cynthia is pleased to offer Saturday appointment times at present

Michael Letts, M.S.W., R.S.W.


Michael graduated from from Queens University in 2001, with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.  He continued his education at Wilfrid Laurier University, graduating in 2004 with his Master of Social Work degree.  He has also completed a Master of Public Administration from University of Western Ontario in 2012.  He is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Michael has worked as a social worker since 2004 and has experience with a wide range of clients experiencing issues such as addictions, domestic violence, anger management, neglect and child abuse, and mental health issues.  Michael has worked with individuals of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.

Michael has recently completed training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and has been using it in his practice with individuals through the lifespan.  
 
He is currently offering daytime and evening appointment times from Monday to Thursday.

Rose Singh, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Rose has a multidisciplinary educational foundation including a Social Service Worker Diploma and Human Resources Management Post-Graduate Certificate from Conestoga College; an Honours Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of General Studies in Social Work, and Certificate in Studies of Child Abuse from the University of Waterloo; a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria; and, a Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University.

Rose is member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), an Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) member, and an Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care (OACYC) member as a Full Professional Certified Child and Youth Counsellor.

Rose is deeply committed to helping others reach their full potential. Rose brings over seventeen years of experience working with persons of all ages and from all walks of life, with a focus on supporting youth and adults living with mental health concerns, disabilities, dual diagnoses, concurrent disorders, substance use, violence, abuse, family conflict and relationship issues.

She is currently available for evening appointments.

Erin Schreiter, M.S.W., R.S.W.

Erin graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1997 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology followed in 1999 by a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University.    She is a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. 

Following her education, Erin worked in the Child Welfare sector and the Violence against Women Sector.  In these fields Erin’s learning expanded to include child development, attachment, trauma and abuse, parenting, mental health and addictions.

Erin offers a compassionate and safe space where you can reflect and process your life experiences.  She is passionate about honoring choice and respecting individuality, while supporting people to achieve their goals, wellness and potential.  She enjoys working with a variety of people of diverse backgrounds including teens, women and men. 

She currently offers daytimes and Wednesday evening appointments.

Rick Defoe, M.A.C.P., R.S.W.

Rick graduated from Yorkville University in 2016 with his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree.  He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Development Studies completed in 2013. He is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). 

Rick in his career has worked in a variety of settings. He has worked as Clinical Therapist, Children & Youth Services Worker, Protection Support Worker and Supervised Access Worker. He has training in Mindfulness, Separation & Divorce, Trauma and attachment. Rick's approachable style makes him easy to work with.

Rick works with a variety of clients including children, youth and individuals. He especially enjoys working with children/youth and their families.

Rick has appointments available Tuesday and Wednesdays during the daytime and evening.

John Thompson, M.S.W., R.S.W.

John attended the University of Waterloo and obtained his B.A. in 1989.  He graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1993, after completing a Master of Social Work degree.  He has been employed both as a social worker and a social work supervisor at Family and Children's Services of the Waterloo Region.  In 1998, he joined the clinical panel of the Office of the Children's Lawyer and began working in private practice. 

John is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, the Ontario Association of Social Workers, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario.  He has had extensive training and experience in helping parents and children deal with separation and divorce.  

John offers a number of services through Cardinal Counselling and Mediation; Section 30 Assessments, Mediation, Parenting Coordination, and other Alternative Dispute Resolution services as required.

John has extensive experience working with families of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, including same sex couples.
